Project Profile: Practical Magic with Hauswitch

Every project brings excitement and challenges to overcome, but we can tell pretty quickly when we have a new favorite. I met Erica Feldman, Hauswitch’s ‘Head Witch in Charge’, at a retreat for women entrepreneurs a few years ago. When she was in the process of transforming her team’s production/office space, she reached out to see if we could optimize their storage to help them grow and streamline their processes.

The Sourcery has incredible natural light and the funky angles of a classic old New England industrial building, which made for some challenges with standard shelving. It also has super high ceilings, which were not being utilized to their maximum capacity. I saw the space, and the potential for custom shelving immediately jumped out! I started to work on a design for Elfa, a TLD favorite from the Container Store, which is a budget-friendly custom solution for any space. Elfa Classic was the best move for this project – our combination of lots of ventilated shelving and a unique free-standing desk solution allows for plenty of customization and flexibility as The Sourcery grows and their needs change.

Once I mocked up the design, consulted with Erica, and made final design decisions, we were ready to make some magic happen. Once all of the materials were ready to go and waiting for us in Salem, MA, myself and two of my team members went over to work some magic. The design included four main areas: the “Large Corner” that houses the bulk of the product components, the “Work Station” where they create their cleaning supplies line, and the “Finished Product Wall” where they store all assembled cleaning products before they’re ready to ship. We also added a smaller solution to hold sprayers and concentrates for maximum utilization of space.

Elfa is designed for flexibility, so while we did all of the assembly and shelf placement upfront, we planned and designed the system for easy adjustments. All of the shelving was designed to be practically floor-to-ceiling to maximize their vertical space to the utmost. As soon as we were finished with our initial install, Erica’s team jumped into filling the shelves with all of their products. They caught on to the possibilities of Elfa with ease, quickly customizing the shelving based on the size of their products. Their excitement about the efficiency and how much we maximized their available space made us all a little giddy!

We can talk about design and installation forever, but the before and after pictures say more than we ever could!

This was an exciting project for many reasons: my friendship with Erica, supporting another small woman-owned business, the opportunity to push the boundaries of previous designs in a relatively constricted space, and of course, supporting the magic of some incredible witches. It was also pretty special to take a trip across the street to their amazing retail space to see their product in action (and to do some shopping) during our lunch break – we couldn’t help ourselves!
