Flower Power: 4 Ways to Spruce Up Your Space

This time of year can be especially dreary – temperatures have decreased, the sun sets early, and we all anticipate those dreaded snow storms. Now is a great time to add some brightness and life to your living situation. Aside from heading to Trader Joes and getting a small bouquet for $3.99, here are some other ways to spruce up your living space with some spruces.

According to the American Horticultural Therapy Association, plants are proven to help increase your self-esteem, improve your mood, reduce anxiety and bring a sense of calm and relaxation into your living space. If only plants could help pay your rent too, they’d be the perfect roommate!

Here are some ways to start the planting process.

1. Keep it simple. Be honest with yourself – some of us just don’t have a green thumb. That’s okay. We aren’t saying your house should resemble a botanical garden! Aloe and jade are two examples of plants that require very little care and attention. Make sure you do your research to know which plants require specific lighting or temperatures for optimal life expectancy. Also remember to not over do it, the last thing we need is additional clutter in our living spaces, especially if it’s not being taken care of properly.

2. Eat it. Is eating healthy one of your New Years resolutions? Bring your green thumb and healthy eating plans into your kitchen by creating a fresh herb garden indoors! One product we love to use is made by Urbio. These magnetic vessels help create a clean look that allow you to easily detach the plant holder from it’s magnetic base for easy maintenance and to easily pluck some parsley.

3. Be creative. Create a Pinterest-y cozy coffee corner for sipping your morning latte while looking onto your sample of succulents. Succulents are a popular, modern and clean look that can be spread throughout your living space. They come in various shapes, sizes and colors, requiring little water and care. Sounds good to me!

4. Shop smart. Next time you find yourself at Home Depot or your favorite garden center, explore what your options are. If taking care of plants is outside of your comfort zone, start small. Purchasing one plant at a time can help give you the confidence to fully beautify your living space. Keep this information in mind when considering your new flowering family. Now channel your inner flower power and get planting!
