Pack Like a Pro: Travel Tips from a Professional Organizer

If you’re anything like me, then you like to stick around for the three months of nice weather in New England. Now that fall is coming to a close, I’m ready to pack my bags and head somewhere beautiful – it’s been too long! Planning a vacation is extremely exciting, but packing can be overwhelming and put off until the last minute. Follow some of these tips to avoid that stress and start your vacation on a positive note!

Plan before packing
The fear of the unknown can lead to severe overpacking in anticipation of a trip. Stick to light layers and neutrals so you’re able to wear multiple shirts with the same pair of bottoms. If you’re going on a tropical vacation, try sticking to a color scheme to keep outfits fun and bright, while also being able to mix and match. Remember, you can always buy a sweatshirt if you’re desperate, and a lot of places include laundry service!

Use Packing Cubes
Since purchasing these Eagle Creek packing cubes, I cannot go back! Containing categories is a lifesaver during the packing and unpacking process. The cubes come in different sizes and have a mesh overlay so you can see what’s in each cube. I find it much easier to pack the same types of clothing items together, rather than by outfit. But do whatever suits your fancy!

Toiletry Land
One hack to packing is keeping a separate set of toiletries permanently packed in a travel bag. Use GoToob Squeezable Travel Bottle for a sustainable way to pack your liquid toiletries and have them ready to grab and go. I also always have a travel size of makeup remover and mini toothpaste (use those freebies from the dentist!) packed in my toiletry bag as well.

How You Pack
As far as folding, rolling your clothes works great in a suitcase to save optimal space, but simply file folding and putting like items with like items will make things fit well, too. Put shoes and bulky items like hair tools at the bottom of the bag near the wheels to help stabilize your suitcase. Next lay in your packing cubes, and tuck in leftovers like bathing suits or scarves in any nooks. Pro tips: wrap belts around the interior frame of the bag and stuff your shoes with your socks.

Last but not least!
Make a list of last-minute and must-have items. We tend to forget the most important things since they’re still in use on travel day. I make a list on my phone and set a reminder notification, but pinning a list on your fridge works also. Consider electronics chargers, your toothbrush, snacks, and your little one’s favorite blanket. I keep all my cords under control with these cord wraps; a total lifesaver in my carry-on! Another fool-proof plan is to keep the essentials with you like a change of clothes in case your checked bags get lost.
