To File Fold, or Not to File Fold, That is the Question

Professional organizers have a variety of tips and tricks for efficient storage solutions. One of our favorite methods is file folding, a technique popularized by Marie Kondo, known for saving space and keeping clothing neat. Our clients are often amazed by how much more we can fit into their drawers using this clothing organization method. But is file folding the right choice for you?

Do any of the following characteristics apply to you? If so, you might want to try file folding!

  • Your closet is cluttered and it is difficult to find the clothing you love

  • You have more drawer space than hanging space

  • Most of your clothing is made of thicker materials like cotton or denim

  • You have a lot of the same category, like t-shirts

Where to Start with File Folding…

Before diving into file folding, it's essential to start with a thorough purge of your clothing. Begin by removing every article of clothing from your closet and drawers (yes, all of it!) and sorting it into categories. Assess each pile one item at a time.

This process helps you view your entire wardrobe at once, making it easier to compare pieces and decide what you truly love versus what can be donated. Discarding items can be difficult, especially if they are still in good condition. However, be grateful for the purpose they served and let them go for someone else to enjoy. Check out our resources page for different options of ways to donate or dispose of unwanted clothing.

Paring down your wardrobe results in a less cluttered space where every item fits comfortably and reflects your style. This also leads to smoother and quicker transitions when getting ready in the morning.

How to File Fold Clothes

Once you’ve pared down your clothing, it’s time to start file folding! This method helps keep your drawers organized and uncluttered, allowing you to find the clothing items you need without pulling out stacks of messy shirts and pants. When clothes are file folded, each article can be seen easily. You can also utilize shelving in your closet by adding bins and file folding into them.

The goal of file folding is to shape each item into a small or large rectangle (depending on drawer size) so it can stand upright in the drawer. Arrange each file-folded item in rows for easy access.

File folding is a great alternative to hanging clothes when you have more drawer space than hanging space, and it frees up hanging space for items that need to be hung.

Enhance Organization with Drawer Dividers

Adding these expandable drawer dividers creates division between clothes and allows these file folded items to stay neatly in place.

When File Folding Might Not Be Ideal…

If you have ample hanging space, clothing made of slippery fabrics like silk, spandex, or polyester, or if you prefer not to manage a new folding system, file folding may not be the best option for you. If you're unsure how to get organized, whether by folding or another method, book a consultation with our team!
