Closet Organizing Hacks You’ll Wish You Knew Sooner
Unless you’re in the midst of a renovation or building a new house from the ground up, there isn’t much you can do about the size of your closet. However, there are quite a few closet hacks that will make it feel like your closet has expanded and you’ll be more organized than ever!
I’m going to share with you some of my favorite closet organizing hacks that you’ll wish you knew sooner.
Freestanding Drawers: Drawers can make all of the difference in the way that you organize your closet. There are some things that you just don’t want to put on a hanger because they’ll stretch out, or maybe they’re just out of season. Adding some freestanding drawers into your closet can add a lot of additional storage. You can buy a set of drawers that are attached, or you can get stacking drawers to really customize your storage options. We love Elfa Drawer Solutions because they are very sturdy but light so they aren’t difficult to move. You can also change out the drawer sizes if your needs change!

Closet Rod Expanders: Do you have more hanging items than you have space for, and don’t want to fold them onto a shelf or into a drawer? The Dublet Adjustable Closet Rod Expander can be a help if you only have a single rod in your closet. Because it’s adjustable, you can make sure the items you're storing are going to fit easily into your closet.
S-Hooks: Use S-Hooks on your closet rod if you have no shelf or drawer space. S-hooks can be found just about anywhere, and can be used for so many different things, especially purses. Not only will it keep them off the floor, but it also helps with keeping the structure of your purse in good condition. You can also use these hooks for jewelry, scarves, towels, or bathing suits you don’t want to waste a hanger on.
Label EVERYTHING: If you’re using bins to store your clothes or accessories, labeling those bins will make it much easier to find everything. Regardless of the type of bin that you’re using, you may have a hard time seeing what’s in your bins, especially if they are on a high shelf. Adding labels will allow you to have easy access to whatever you are looking for.
Utilize Your Door: There are so many possibilities when it comes to using your closet door. One of my favorites is using it for your shoes. Any kind of shoe rack that hangs over your door will free up your floor space in your closet to use for other things.
Another use of your closet door is for storing your accessories. There are LOTS of different ways you can do this: a jewelry storage/mirror combo, baskets for small items (socks, hats, scarves, etc.), or even a single hook for your belts and ties. Utilizing your door for storage is something that we recommend to anyone who is hoping to get more out of their closet space.
Door racks are another Elfa solution that we use ALL the time with our clients.
Seasonal Clothing Swaps: Swapping out your summer and winter clothes will ensure your tanks are not hidden behind the bulky sweaters and your summer shawls aren’t wedged in between your winter scarves. Putting your seasonal clothing in a bin (and labeled, of course) and storing them is going to make looking for that one shirt you absolutely need for the day so much easier.
These are just some of the hacks that we recommend and implement in our everyday lives. Use them all or pick out the ones that will work best for you – every space is different! Knowing what you have to work with and where to implement certain solutions will be key to making these work for you. And if you get stuck on which ones will work best in your closet, we’re always happy to help. Reach out for a consultation and we’ll make sure you’re able to use every last inch of space in your closet.
