Now Is The Time To Get Organized!

Did you know January is GO Month? It stands for “Get Organized!”

If getting organized is on your list of resolutions for 2016, here are some ways to make your organizing dreams come true. Have you heard of NAPO – National Association of Professional Organizers. I know, it sounds crazy – a large group of Type A’s gathering together, each trying to take control from one another? It’s actually quite the opposite. NAPO is comprised of men and women in the Professional Organizing industry that come together to share experiences, resources, techniques and more. If you are struggling to get organized, one way to start is to find an organizer in your area which you can easily access through the NAPO-New England website.

So what’s the magic solution?! I don’t mean to disappoint you, but there is not a one size fits all remedy to make you or your space more organized. It might seem like step one to getting organized is to go out and buy pretty bins – STOP! PUT DOWN THE BINS! WALK AWAY FROM THE CONTAINERS! Before you buy organizing systems and products it’s important to go through your space and see what you have. Once you decide what you really need, want and use, then you have our permission to get bins and all sorts of products to create systems to stay organized.

TIP: While organizing, try to stick to one area at a time. It’s so easy to get distracted, especially when you find things that belong in other parts of your home. You’re in the kitchen organizing your spice rack and you find a hair band, so you head to the bathroom to put it away and suddenly you find yourself two hours later organizing your hair products and your spices are still all over the kitchen counter. Get one project done at a time so you can see progress and stay motivated. It’s easy to get overwhelmed during this process, so make sure you take breaks, eat healthy meals and stay hydrated. If you want to tackle organizing your paper – you go for it! But keep in mind, that paper typically takes longer and it’s harder to see progress. Something else that can be helpful is to take pictures of the before and after of each space so you don’t lose sight of how far you’ve come.

Be kind to yourself, this is a process. Everyone is different and therefore what is important is that your system works for YOU – even if it doesn’t look like an HGTV ad or a Martha Stewart Living catalog cover.

There are so many ways to get organized – digitally, mentally, physically. It can be very overwhelming, but keep that dream board in your mind (or on your living room wall) to keep you motivated. Once you have the right systems in place you won’t just feel better, you’ll function better. Start 2016 off with a BANG – New Year, New You!
