If you asked the average Bostonian to describe the scene in Boston on September 1st, most would describe it as a nightmare. For those of you who don’t know, the most common rental period in Boston begins September 1st. That’s why there were what seemed like thousands of UHaul’s taking over the streets last week. Now that your move is done, the unpacking begins! Although you may not own the space, that’s no excuse to not make it your own. This blog is all about rental hacks so you can keep that security deposit and make your house feel like home.

  1. Command Strips: These guys will quickly become your best friend. Use them to hang pictures, oven mitts, hand towels, you name it. They’re easy to adhere to the wall and are damage free.

  2. Replace hardware: If you’re feeling like your kitchen needs a bit of an upgrade, add your own knobs and pulls to your kitchen drawers and cabinets.

  3. Removable wallpaper: If interior design is your thing, look into thisremovable wallpaper by Loomwell. They have a ton of options that are super fun and cute and can add tons of character to your space, even if it’s only on one wall.

  4. Over the door shoe rack: Expand your storage space (whether it be for bathroom accessories, winter gear or shoes) by using an over the door shoe rack. We suggest the pockets are clear so you can see exactly what’s in them and also keep them labeled so you know where things should be returned.

  5. Offer Up & Craigslist: Rather than paying full price for any of your furniture or home decor, check to see if it’s available on the Offer Up app or Craigslist for a discounted price.

  6. Cover up the old: If your blinds look like they’ve had too much sun, add your own curtains to the mix to give your apartment the facelift you never knew it needed.

  7. Cover the carpeting: Similarly to the blinds, if your carpets have seen better days, get a new area rug to cover it up. It doesn’t have to take up the entire wall-to-wall carpet space, but even just an 8’x10’ rug can make a huge difference.

  8. Bed risers: If your apartment lacks serious storage space, consider purchasing bed risersso you can store some bigger, bulkier items underneath your bed. If you’re lacking outlets, consider thesebed risers equipped with USB ports and power outlets.

  9. Kitchen storage: If you need extra storage in your cabinets look no further! Shelf risersadd the illusion of a whole other shelf if you have wasted vertical space.

  10. Medicine cabinet: If you need some extra space for your toiletries invest in a medicine cabinet. A plain mirror against a bathroom wall is always a missed storage opportunity! We love using thismedicine cabinet from IKEA. It has tons of storage space, plus extra lighting.

Even though you’ve physically moved into your new rental space, don’t forget about putting in the effort to make it feel like it’s yours. By following these hacks you’ll gain storage space you didn’t think you needed and help decorate your space without costing yourself your security deposit.
