Holiday Decorating Organizing Tips

Autumn is in full swing, and you know what that means—cooler weather, pumpkin-spiced everything, and holiday decorations. While those first two are beyond our control, we can help make your holiday decorating easier to manage, more fun, and something to look forward to every year. Here are a few helpful tips to keep your decorations better organized and ready to find for any occasion.

Color-coordinated bins: It shouldn’t come as a surprise that we use a lot of color-coordinating when we organize. This includes storage bins for holiday decorations, which makes them easy to spot and distinguish from one another. We often recommend these colorful Sterilite bins to clients when they need help storing their decorations for the next holiday season. For example, you can use the orange one for Halloween costumes, brown for Thanksgiving crafts, blue for Hanukkah décor, and green and/or red for Christmas lights.

Ornaments: When it comes to your ornament collection, we recommend starting the same way you would with any other organizing project—sort and purge! You may want to hold on to every ornament you own, which is okay. But oftentimes ornaments break, become outdated, or no longer match your style. It’s fine to donate or recycle ornaments that no longer suit your taste or bring you joy, especially as you acquire new ones. For the ones you decide to keep for the season, we recommend easy storage in these zippered bags.

Easy lighting storage: Anyone who has experience with holiday decorating can relate to the pile of tangled lights that must be dealt with at the start of the season. This is not a necessary decorating evil! There are so many handy products that can help you keep your lights neatly organized all year round. Try this holiday light wrap with secure plug holders or these Real Simple light spools.

Labels: Labeling is a great way to locate different items, regardless of how many you have or how you store them. You already know that we recommend colorful bins for different holidays, but you can opt for clear bins, baskets, or boxes as well. Regardless of any containers you use, labeling each one helps make holiday decorations easier to hunt down when it’s time to decorate. We love this label maker from The Container Store, and use it on many of our holiday projects!

You’re off to a good start and ready to get organized this holiday season. If you get stuck, just give us a call. We’re here to help!
