How to Unpack the Organized Way
Moving into a new space is exciting—but unpacking? That’s where things can get overwhelming quickly. Whether you're in your first apartment or a forever home, the key to a smooth move-in experience is a little strategy to keep your space and mind organized. We’re here to give you a few tips on how to unpack after your move, the organized way.
Pack an Essentials Box (And Thank Yourself Later)
Before you even start unpacking, make sure you have your essentials box within arm’s reach. This should include anything you’ll need within the first 24–48 hours: toiletries, chargers for your phone, laptop, and any must-have electronics, your coffee or tea setup (because let’s be real, you’ll need it the next morning), and bedding for a good night’s sleep after a long day of moving. Having these basics ready means you won’t have to go digging through boxes just to brush your teeth or make a cup of coffee; you’ll be ready to start the next day of unpacking without any hiccups or pre-unpacking panic.
Put Boxes in the Right Room from the Start
This one’s a game-changer. When packing, each box should be clearly labeled with the room it belongs in: Kitchen, Bathroom, Primary Bedroom, etc. When you're moving in, bring each box directly into its designated space. It might seem like a small step, but this one habit makes a huge difference. Instead of constantly moving boxes around or forgetting where something is, you can dive right into unpacking each room with focus and intention.
Unpack One Box at a Time
Resist the urge to rip open every box and scatter its contents across the floor. Unpacking is a marathon, not a sprint. The more you spread things out, the harder it is to stay organized.
Take it one box at a time. Finish unpacking everything in that box, and put each item in its proper place before moving on to the next.
When it comes to the order of rooms, everyone has different priorities, but here’s a helpful starting lineup: Kitchen (you’ll want to cook, eat, and hydrate), Bathroom, Bedroom & closet, Living room, and then any remaining spaces (i.e.guest rooms, offices, closets).
Set Realistic Goals
It’s tempting to want your home “done” on day one, but that kind of pressure leads to burnout. Instead, set small, manageable goals for yourself each day: “Today I’ll finish the kitchen,” “Tomorrow I’ll unpack the bathroom and linen closet,” “Friday is living room day.”
Taking it one space at a time will make progress feel steady and satisfying. You’ll see results without feeling like you're drowning in to-dos.
Hold Off on Installing For Now
Hooks, shelves, and wall-mounted storage can wait. Even if you’re eager to get organized, it’s wise to live in your space for a bit before committing to where everything goes.
Give yourself a few days to get used to how you move through the space. You may realize the coat rack works better near the back door or that your favorite art makes more sense above the sofa than the dresser. Waiting to install gives you flexibility and avoids unnecessary holes in the walls. Plus, what’s better than adding those finishing touches at the very end to make sure your new home feels just right?
Unpacking doesn’t have to feel chaotic. With a methodical approach, you can ease into your new space with confidence. The goal isn’t perfection right away, it’s creating a home that functions well and feels good.
Start with the essentials, take it room by room, and give yourself grace in the process. You’ve already done the hard part—now it’s time to settle in. And remember, you don’t have to do it alone!
