Project Profile: Preparing for a New Baby

Organizers are hired for many reasons and in different seasons of life. Most people think of hoarding or chronic disorganization as the impetus for hiring outside help, or of an aging parent and downsizing. We are very lucky to get to support our clients through lots of transitions, but one is especially exciting: welcoming a new member of the family.

We have worked with a wide variety of different expecting parents – some who have a few kids and are trying to make space wherever they can, others who are first time parents and have never even heard of a corner protector. We support with organizing the home as it is, space planning, repurposing or rearranging rooms, coordinating baby proofing, installing shelving and assembling furniture, and folding all of those tiny little clothes. We know that the time shortly after the birth of a new baby can be incredibly overwhelming, so we make every effort to anticipate challenges and set up excellent systems to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Creating a Nursery from Nothing

This family had a tiny home office in their Boston apartment. Before the baby came, it housed a desk, the Peloton, and some overflow storage. It functioned for them at the time but they knew that they needed to make some major adjustments to prepare for the newest member of their family.

We are often tasked with reimagining a space, and this is a great example of that kind of project. Stasia helped to pick out wallpaper, storage options, and furniture that would be comfortable and safe for a baby. She also designed a closet that would be easily adjustable as the baby grew, and that was able to continue to function as overflow storage.

Additional Storage for Growing Kiddos

Creating a space for a baby from scratch is a treat, but we have also had a lot of fun adding additional storage to prepare for the next stage of childhood.

In this first household, the basement was their cat playroom and a gathering place for outgrown toys. The parents had an ambition to turn it into a playroom when the kids got older, but it didn't have the storage they knew they would need for toy rotation until then. We saw a great opportunity for an open wall Elfa system here – this left plenty of space along the back wall for a couch or beanbags in the future while providing lots of functional storage for today.

This second household had a similar setup when we got started. This huge basement wall quickly started to become a dumping ground. Their finished basement had lots of space but not nearly enough storage. We installed quite a few other spaces in this home – they were expecting a second child and wanted to get new systems in order before in-laws arrived for an extended stay. This open wall Elfa system creates a ton of adaptable storage for toys and baby accessories as both kiddos grow.

Whether you are becoming a first time parent or expanding your family and need storage to match, we are here to help you through the transition! Our team creates solutions for every circumstance and budget. Get started by scheduling a call with us!
